Lieber Verehrter! 1 Wieder habe ich Ihnen für zwei Briefe 2 zu danken, deren einer mich in Salzburg, der andere hier erreichte. Ich muss morgen beruflich nach Cilli 3 fahren und bleibe dann noch bis etwa 5. September hier bei den Meinen. Die 11 Tage in Salzburg waren sehr anstrengend; in dieser Hitze Saalkonzerte und Opernvorstellungen im Theater zu geben, ist eigentlich barbarisch. Hoboken hat mich nicht in Salzburg besucht, obzwar er sicher in Henndorf bei Zuckmayers Fest war. 4 Die Frage der Inflation kann ich nicht fachlich beantworten. Meinem Gefühl nach haben wir im Inland an der Entwertung des Schillings noch nicht zu leiden. Bei der eigenen Schwächung Hobokens scheint mir deshalb jetzt eine Mehrforderung nicht angebracht. Ich habe sie leider in den letzten Jahren versäumt. Saltens Aufsatz 5 scheine ich nicht gelesen zu haben; ich sah von ihm nur eine neue „Jedermann“-Kritik. Wie in Igls benahm sich das Paar auf der Terrasse Sandor Wolfs in Eisenstadt 6 vor einer halb offiziellen Gesellschaft, wo sie gerade noch von mir als Gast aus Berlin eingeschmuggelt werden konnte. Hoffen wir, dass er alle Krisen übersteht. Dass der neue Chopin 7 auch schlecht ist, hatte ich nicht erwartet, weil der Herausgeber doch ein – wenn auch einseitig und zufällig – gutes Material zur Vorlage hatte. Also wieder nichts! Ich freue mich, dass es Vrieslander besser geht, wie es nach Ihren Andeutungen scheint. Tomorrow I must make a business trip to Cilli; 3 after that, I shall stay here with my family until about the 5th of September. The eleven days in Salzburg were exhausting; to give indoor concerts and operatic performances in the theater in this heat is actually barbaric. Hoboken did not visit me in Salzburg, although he was certainly in Henndorf at Zuckmayer’s festival. 4 I cannot give a professional answer to the question about inflation. My feeling is that we will not have to suffer a devaluation of the shilling in this country. Given Hoboken’s own [financial] weakening, a request for additional payment would seem to be inappropriate at this time. Unfortunately I missed this opportunity in the last few years. I don’t believe that I have read Salten’s essay; 5 I saw only a recent review of Jedermann. As in Igls, the pair comported themselves on the terrace of Sandor Wolf in Eisenstadt 6 before a semiformal society, into which they still could be smuggled, as guests of mine from Berlin. Let us hope that he [Hoboken] survives all the crises. I did not expect that the new edition of Chopin 7 would also be bad, given that the editor, though he may be one-sided and haphazard, had good source material at his disposal. Well, nothing again! I am glad to hear that things are going well for Vrieslander, as seems to be the case from your remarks. H.s nicht angebracht.” (“From Deutsch (letter): he will still reply to my letters; increase [in lesson fee] from Hoboken would not be appropriate.”). 2 Schenker’s diary entry for August 10 records a reply to Deutsch’s postcard of August 8: “An Deutsch (Br.): zur Orientierung über das Paar u. v. H. Parole: Abwarten, nicht bedrängen; über den Brief von Haas, Vrieslanders Besuch, Dr. Salzer, bevorstehenden Besuch von Furtwängler u. Rinn.” (“To Deutsch (letter): words of guidance about the pair and Hoboken’s word of honor: wait and see, don’t force; concerning Haas’s letter, Vrieslander’s visit, Dr. Salzer, Furtwängler’s and Rinn’s impending visit.”) -- A second letter, to which Deutsch’s present letter is a response, is recorded on August 24: “An Deutsch (Br.): haben wir eine Inflation? Wie stellen wir uns Hoboken gegenüber?” (“To Deutsch (letter): are we encountering inflation? How should we present ourselves with respect to Hoboken?”). 3 Cilli (Celje), a large town in the former Yugoslavia, now Slovenia. 4 The German playwright Carl Zuckmayer (1896–1977), author of The Captain from Köpenick and scriptwriter for the film The Blue Angel. In 1926 he moved to the village of Henndorf, near Salzburg, where his house became a center for the Austrian literati (Ödon von Horvath, Stefan Zweig, and others).
