Lieber Schenker!

Also nochmals ebenso aufrichtiger Dank als deine Widmung 1 aufrichtigen Gefühlen gegen mich entspricht. Natürlich habe ich das Buch 2 schon längst, zwar sehr fleißig gelesen, danke ihm viel Vergnügen, Belehrung. Ich finde es in allen Teilen vorzüglich. Sehr recht war mir dein Rütteln an der Programmmusik, wäre eine Betrachtung in Bezug auf die Stellung, die Beethoven zu ihr eingenommen hat[,] sehr interressant [sic]. Ich wäre dar war darüber [?rein] gut zu sprechen und die Meinung, dass auf dieser Welt nichts rein bleibt macht meinen Pessimismus aus. Gründen wir zur Abwechslung einen Bach Haydn Mozartverein. Deine ausführlichen Mitteilungen über die Vorlesungen sind wol auch ein Beitrag zu den „Unreinen“ oder wollen wir lieber sagen Sauerei.

Dear Schenker,

Once again, my sincere thanks to you, in equal measure to the sincere feelings that your dedication 1 has awakened in me. Of course, I have long since read the book, 2 and indeed very assiduously, and thank it for much enjoyment and instruction. I find it excellent in all its parts. I found your attack upon programmatic music quite appropriate; a consideration of the position that Beethoven took on it would be most interesting. I was [?prepared] to speak [?well] of it; and the belief that, in this world, nothing remains pure, arouses my pessimism. Let us, for a change, found a Bach–Haydn–Mozart Society. Your detailed communications about the lectures are, for sure, also a contribution on the impurities or, to put it better, disgrace.

I send my best greetings to you, also to Violin if you should see the Graedeners.
