Oppel sandte mir vorgestern beiliegendes Stück, 2 es hat schon viel amüsiert, nun sende ich es auch dir zur tunlichsten Aufheiterung ein, erbitte ich es aber zurück am liebsten aus deiner Hand.

Morgen Samst. Nachm. findet bei mir eine Kuratoriumssitzung ( Hob , Haas , Kromer u. ich) statt. Vielleicht klärt sich manches.

Der l. Wolf hat sich wieder einmal geleistet: „Die Mama läßt fragen“, {2} ich habe aber energisch abgewhert.

Wenn er reisen will, nach seinem Wunsche zu den Weihnachtsferien, oder nach dem Wunsche der l. Mama schon zu Anfang Dezember, um ein Wiedersehen mit den anderen Geschwistern zu feiern, dann reise er, doch nicht auf meine Kosten. Ich habe ihm die technische Unausführbarkeit zur Genüge erwiesen, nun wird er hoffentlich Ruhe geben.

Sonntags konnte ich dir schon mehr sagen. Vielleicht? Im übrigen, wenn es dir paßt, auch möglich ist.

Oppel sent me the enclosed piece the day before yesterday; 2 it has already caused much merriment, and now I am sending it on to you for your possible amusement; may I please have it back, preferably from your own hand.

Tomorrow, Saturday afternoon, there will be a meeting of the Board of Trustees [of the Photogram Archive] (Hoboken, Haas, Kromer, and I). Perhaps much will be cleared up.

Our dear Wolf has done it once again: “My mother would like to know”; {2} I have, however, energetically repelled him.

If he wishes to go away, of his own accord, for the Christmas holidays or, following his mother’s wishes, as early as the beginning of December, to celebrate a rendezvous with other siblings, then let him go away – but not at my expense. I have explained to him sufficiently why it is technically unfeasible; let us hope that he will now keep quiet.

On Sunday I shall already be able to say more. Is this a possibility? At any rate, if it’s convenient for you, even possible.

1 Schenker recorded in his diary for December 1, 1933: “An Fl. (Br.): die Goos-Sache. — v. H. ist heute wieder anders, will Dienstag abreisen!” (“To Floriz (letter): the Goos affair. — Today things are again different with Hoboken: he plans to leave on Tuesday!”). Goos was a pupil of Reinhardt Oppel to whom Oppel had referred in a letter dated November 26, 1933.

2 According to the diary entry for November 28, 1933, this was a Deutschlandhymne by Josef Knettel (1875–1972), a composer and choral director based in Bingen-am-Rhein. The full diary entry reads: “Von Oppel (Br.): schickt eine neue Deutschland-Hymne von Knettel, ein Bildchen von Beppo u. eine Einladung der Goos-Schule zu einer Schenker-Vorlesung; im Brief eine gute Musikkritik, über die Verhältnisse. Das Nebeneinander von Hitler, Goebels u. Schenker wirkt sehr erheiternd.” (“From Oppel (letter): sends a new hymn to Germany by Knettel, a snapshot of Beppo, and an invitation from Goos’s school to a lecture on Schenker; in the letter, a good music review; concerning the conditions [in Germany]. The juxtaposition of the names Hitler, Goebbels, and Schenker has a very amusing effect.”).
