Man hatte die Lumpigkeit, dem Bankdirektor zuzubilligen, daß er in der inneren Sta atdt bereits eine neue Wohnung bezog u. die alte – ungekündigt beibehielt, also 2 Wohnungen, hatte. Und daraus, daß der Direktor „nicht gekündigt“ hatte (es geschah ja mit Absicht) wurde der Strick dem Administrator gedreht, u. unverfroren röteten sie: der Adm. habe nicht das Recht gehabt, zu vermieten „weil die Wohnung nicht gekündigt war!“ 3 U. diese Korruption (System: Austerlitz-Verdrehung 4 ) spielt Freiheit, Unbestehlichkeit u.s.w. Geschmeiß! Für uns entsetzlich. [left margin, written sideways:] Wenn ich nur wüsste, wer Wohnungen schachert. Mein Fall zeigt ja, daß es {recto} in der Partei ohne Schacher nicht zugeht. People had the shabbiness to allow the bank director to have already acquired a new apartment in the city center while holding on to his old one without giving notice to quit – hence he had two apartments. And as a result of the director's "not giving notice" (it happened deliberately), a noose was put round the neck of the administrator, and they blushed insolently: the administrator did not have the right to let "because notice to quit had not been given for the apartment!" 3 And this corruption (system: Austerlitz-reversal 4 ) plays freedom, incorruptibility, etc. Vermin! For us, abominable. [left margin, written sideways:] If only I had known who horse-trades with apartments! My case certainly shows that {recto} nothing gets done without horse-trading. ("To Floriz (postcard): report on the negative conclusion"). 2 The Schenkers had been seeking an apartment in Reisnerstraße 17 since April 19: The apartment was half-promised them by the architect Herr Starrach, and the "Red" may perhaps have been Dr. Ermers, editor of the liberal German newspaper Der Morgen. See diary OJ 3/1, pp. 2228 (April 19–21), pp. 2236–2239 (May 11, 25, 26), p. 2241–2242, 2246–2247 (June 3, 4, 10, 25, 26), 2262 (July 28). 3 Schenker is quoting the architect's words: OJ 3/1, p. 2247, July 30, 1920: "Von Starrach Brief u. Telegramm: ungünstiger Ausgang! Begründung: dem Hausverwalter habe nicht das Recht zugestanden, eine nicht gekündigte Wohnung zu vermieten." ("From Starrach letter and telegram: negative conclusion! Reasoning: the house manager did not have the right to rent an apartment for which notice to quit had not been given."). 4 Austerlitz-Verdrehung: probably a reference to a tactical maneuvre by Napoleon at the Battle of Austerlitz (1805). |
