Lieber Herr Doctor!
Seit kurzer Zeit ist meine Adresse wie oben – ich bleibe den Winter über hier –
im Jänner kommt meine neue Oper heraus.

Hoffentlich werden wir uns bald sehen.
Heute möchte ich Sie fragen, ob Sie Unterricht erteilen (Klavier) und ob Sie eine
junge Dame unterrichten wollen, welche mir von der Prinzessin Windisch-Grätz
empfohlen wurde? Ich gebe keinen Unterricht, wie Sie wissen. Was die junge Dame
anbelangt, so bedarf sie einer strengen führenden
Hand – vielleicht hat sie Talent.
Bitte lassen Sie mir bald ein Wort zukommen.
Von Ihrer Ausgabe der chromatischen Fantasie bin ich entzückt!

Dear Dr. [Schenker],
For a little while now, my address has been as above – I shall remain here
throughout the winter – my new opera

comes out in January. I hope we will see one
another soon.
Today I should like to ask you whether you are doing any teaching (piano). If so,
would you be interested in teaching a young lady who has been recommended to me by
Princess Windisch-Grätz? As you know, I am not doing any teaching. As concerns the
young woman, she is in need of a firm guiding
hand. She may perhaps have talent.
Please drop me a line soon.
I am enchanted by your edition of the
