Ser. A, {7}a *
⇧ Nur der wahrhaft Kluge kann auch wahrhaft tugendhaft sein . . . *„H. Richter sieht ins Große“ . . . . ? ‒ „Nein, ins Leere, sag’ ich.“ [draft in Heinrich's hand in Ser. B, p. 2] *Auffallender Mangel an heiteren Liedern selbst bei einem ‒ Schubert. Auch die Komponisten wollen ihre Freuden, so scheint es, für sich allein blos genießen, während sie mit den Schmerzen gern die „Musen spielen lassen.“ Nach ihnen gehört also auch die Liebe ⇧ offenbar nur ⇧ zu den‒Schmerzen! (Tournée Mescheart [sic] ‒Sch. 1 ) [draft in Heinrich's hand in Ser. B, p. 2] *Schönheit ‒ im letzten Grunde doch vielleicht nur wieder eine verkappte ‒ Nützlichkeit. Ser. A, {7}a *
⇧ Only the intelligent person can also be truly virtuous. ... *"H. Richter gazes out into greatness" ... ? ‒ "No, into emptiness, say I." [draft in Heinrich's hand in Ser. B, p. 2] *Striking lack of cheerful songs even on the part of a ‒ Schubert. What's more, composers, so it would appear, want to keep their moments of joy entirely to themselves, while they gladly "give the muses free rein" with their sorrows. According to them love, too, belongs ⇧ clearly only ⇧ to ‒ sorrows! (Concert tour Messchaert‒Schenker 1 ) [draft in Heinrich's hand in Ser. B, p. 2] *Beauty ‒ ultimately, really perhaps only ‒ a disguised serviceability. [draft in Heinrich's hand in Ser. B, p. 2] *© Translation Ian Bent, 2017 |
Footnotes1 The "Austrian-Hungarian concert tour" (Österr.-Ung. Tournée) that Schenker undertook with Johannes Messchaert ran from January 7 to February 3, 1899, performances being given in Vienna, Klagenfurt, Marburg, Graz, Triest, Brünn (Brno), Lundenburg (Břeclav), Krakow, Lemberg (L'viv), Budapest, Linz, Schreckenstein (Střekov), and Aussig. (The concert schedule is preserved at OJ 35/5, pp. 48‒49.) These dates present a clear anomaly; however, the draft at Ser. B, p. 2 did not initially include this parenthesis: it was added later in Heinrich's hand in pencil (along with other editings), and was subsequently included by Jeanette in her fair copy. |
