Man sollte von Patriotismus nicht nur im Verhältnis der Untertanen zur Regierung, sondern auch im Verhältnis der Regierung zu den Untertanen sprechen. In diesem Sinne ist alles falsche u. unvernünftige Betragen einer Regierung zugleich als unpatriotisch zu brandmarken. Z. B. finde ich es unpatriotisch, wenn die amtliche „Wiener Ztg.“ von einem Einrückungs- {953} termin spricht, ¹ von dem die amtlichen Behörden nichts wissen, so daß eine gewisse Gruppe Einzurückender wegen unpatriotischer „Pflichterfüllung“ der betreffenden Beamten nicht weiß, ob sie am 21. Juni oder 15. Juli einzurücken habe.

One ought to speak about patriotism in terms not only of the relationship of subjects to their government but also of the relationship of the government to its subjects. In this sense, all false and unreasonable behavior on the part of a government should equally be labeled as unpatriotic. For example, I regard it as unpatriotic when the official Wiener Zeitung speaks about an enlistment date, ¹ {953} of which the official authorities know nothing, so that a certain group of people to be enlisted do not know, on account of an unpatriotic "fulfillment of duty" on the part of the officials concerned, whether they have to enlist on June 21 or July 15.
