August 29, 1917.
A storm at 5 o'clock in the morning, dark clouds, mist and rain. — I dream that I, in the company of Bach [Johann Sebastian Bach], Dr. Violin [Eduard Violin] and Dr. Frühmann [Paul Frühmann], combine voice leading with eating; but then the latter two gentlemen suddenly take their leave of Bach [Johann Sebastian Bach] and me, and I reproach them by saying that they would never learn the theory of voice leading if they did not eat with us. In the dream I even pursue the renegades, but I see how Dr. Violin [Eduard Violin], in a neighboring room, is entranced by a gigantic portion of ham, something that finally opens my eyes to his gastric egoism and contempt for the theory of voice leading. — {757} Postcard to Mrs. Baudrexel [Dolfi Baudrexel]: Lie-Liechen [Jeanette Schenker] announces her return on September 12. — Money sent to Kautzen. Date of travel given. — Postcard to Sophie [Sophie Guttmann]: I seek to comfort her and ask her whether she perhaps has too little to eat; I say that she is right about Wilhelm [Wilhelm Schenker] and Mozio [Moritz Schenker] and tell her that I have completed Counterpoint 2 [Kontrapunkt: Zweiter Halbband]. — Towards 7 o'clock, rain mixed with snow! And yet the rain stops by late evening. —© Translation William Drabkin. |
