Vor der Ankunft unseres Sorgenkindes hatte ich gestern mit Haas und Thomasberger ³ eine Besprechung darüber, wie man H. in Bälde ehren könnte und ihn womöglich auch bewegen, seine Sammlungen in Wien zu erhalten. Die Details werde ich Ihnen bei nächster Gelegenheit mündlich berichten. Heute möchte ich nur in zwei Punkten des Planes Ihre Meinung erbitten.

Man verspricht sich viel davon, dass Furtwängler an den Minister einen Brief schriebe, worin er ihn auf die Bedeutung des Archives aufmerksam macht (eventuell auch der Bibliothek) und ihm nahe legt, den Gründer und Erhalter zu ehren und selbst zu erhalten. Glauben Sie, dass F. dazu haben wäre, und würden Sie es übernehmen, ihm darüber zu schreiben. Die Anschrift des Ministers würde ich Ihnen {2} noch geben.

Zweitens: es soll ein neuer und grosser Artikel über das Archiv in einer Wiener Zeitung erscheinen (eventuell auch über die Bibliothek). Dazu wäre wohl nur Korngold oder Decsey von den Musikreferenten mit Einfluss geeignet. An Decsey kann ich herantreten. Meinen Sie, dass Korngold, der nicht schreibt, wenn er nicht muss, dafür zu gewinnen wäre – etwa auf Grund Ihrer letzten Begegnung. Ich habe keine Fühlung mit ihm und Haas zweifelt an seiner Bereitwilligkeit.

In the haste of departure, I again forgot to take with me the prospectus for the Institute in Hamburg, ² which you wanted to lend me.

Before our problem child arrived, I had a discussion yesterday with Haas and Thomasberger ³ about how we might soon be able to confer a civic honor upon Hoboken and also persuade him to keep his collections in Vienna. I shall report the details to you, face to face, at the earliest opportunity. Today, I ask your opinion only on two aspects of the plan.

It would mean a great deal if Furtwängler would write a letter to the Minister, alerting him to the significance of the Archive (and possibly also to the library) and suggest that the founder and keeper be honored, and to keep him here too. Do you think that Furtwängler could be persuaded to do this; and would you take the responsibility of writing to him about it. I would then give you the minister’s address.

{2} Secondly: a new, long article about the Archive (again, possibly, about the library) should appear in a Viennese newspaper. For this, only Korngold and Décsey are suitably influential among the music reviewers. I could approach Décsey; do you think that Korngold, who will not write if he does not have to write, could be won over – perhaps on the basis of your most recent encounter [with him]. I don’t have any contact with him, and Haas is doubtful of his willingness.
