Zunächst handelt es sich also nur um diese S 100.–, die als Winterhilfe sozusagen gewährt wurden. Ich bringe es nicht über mich, neuerdings darum zu bitten.

Band jetzt vorbereitet wird, gegenüber den Werkverzeichnissen sind, die ich aus der Bibliothek H. herausgeben könnte: Erstdrucke der grossen Meister mit Angabe auch der uns fehlenden Stücke. Das wären wirkliche Kompendien, die dauernd wichtig blieben. Wenn ich bis dahin nicht einen englischen oder amerikanischen Verleger gefunden habe, so wird H. vielleicht doch einmal dafür, was sein Ruhm wäre, zu haben sein.

Aber das sind nur Parerga und Paralipomena. ²

I would like to add to what we said today over the telephone only the following remark: that even now I would ask you to intercede only if you are as certain about your matter – your own, that is – as I and other initiates understand it, so far as it is humanly possible. And then if you deem the moment in time appropriate, the occasion right. For me, the only burning question for the next ten months is whether my salary – which had been reduced from 500 to 200 shillings in the autumn of 1932 but was graciously raised to 300 shillings until April 1934 after my most recent loss of earnings – must really sink again to 200 shillings in spite of the new situation: the library will remain in Vienna and will be reassembled in February 1935. It is thus mainly a question of these 100 shillings, which will be vouchsafed as winter assistance, so to speak. I cannot bring myself to ask for this again.

{2} If you find the right occasion, then we may be helped. Otherwise, I shall probably have to seek a secondary profession this year.

Later, when Hoboken is again in residence here, my position will be better. I know that he cannot find a replacement for me, and I could surely ask for 400 shillings, despite the adversity of the times. But now it is just a question of what is obvious: the next ten months.

In conversation yesterday, I recalled how lightweight the beautiful catalogs of Paul Hirsch of Frankfurt (the third volume is now in preparation) are, compared to the work catalogs that I could publish from Hoboken’s library: first editions of the great masters with an indication also of the prints that we are missing. They would be true compendia which would remain important for a long time. If you have not found an English or American publisher for them by the time [that I finish them], then maybe Hoboken can someday be prevailed upon to do so, to his glory.

But that is merely Appendices and Omissions. ²
