Den Brief 1 habe ich wohl gekannt, zum mindesten sind mir alle Einzelstellen fast wörtlich im Gedächtnis geblieben. Aber daß Jahn 2 ihn angezweifelte u. Schiedermair 3 ihn nicht aufgenommen, wußte ich nicht. {verso} Wie ist das nur möglich. So ein prachtvolles Dokument u. so echt mozartisch dazu! Nochmals vielen Dank u. I was certainly aware of the letter, 1 at least all the individual passages remained almost word-for-word in my memory. But I did not know that Jahn 2 doubted its authenticity and Schiedermair did not include it. 3 {verso} How can that be possible? Footnotes1 Seligmann is acknowledging the receipt of Schenker’s "Ein verschollener Brief von Mozart und das Geheimnis seines Schaffens," Der Kunstwart 44 (July 1931), pp. 660–66. 2 Otto Jahn, whose Biographie Mozarts (1856) was the first major study of Mozart’s life and work. In his diary for March 18, 1931 Schenker records requesting the first edition, volume 3, of Jahn’s biography from the Music Division of the Austrian National Library, and the volume being brought to him the next day. At his death, Schenker’s library contained a copy of the third edition (1889) (Musik und Theater enthaltend die Bibliothek des Herrn †Dr. Heinrich Schenker, Wien (Vienna: Heinrich Hinterberger, [1936]). 3 Ludwig Schiedermair, ed., Die Briefe W.
