Mahler IX. Symph. der grösste Dreck [–] verzeihen Sie – den ich jemals gehört habe, 3 das Publikum, dem dies gefällt, ist nicht wert dass der barmherzige Freund Hein 4 sie überhaupt in Empfang nehme. Beeth. IX. ist bereits draussen. 5 Freue mich auf das genaue Studium! Mahler's Ninth Symphony: the greatest filth ‒ forgive me ‒ that I have ever heard. 3 The audience who enjoyed it is undeserving that the merciful Angel of Death 4 received it in the first place. Beethoven's Ninth has just appeared. 5 I look forward to studying it carefully! Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary. 2 On June 2, 1912, Schenker had written congratulating Hertzka on being offered Weisse's compositions (WSLB 116), to which Hertzka replied the next day (OC 52/427). Weisse had an interview with Hertzka c. June 5 (WSLB 118, OC 52/493), and on June 9 Schenker wrote to Hertzka regarding payment to Weisse (WSLB 120). On November 7, 1912 Schenker wrote reminding Hertzka that he had kept Weisse's scores for five months (OJ 1/11, p. 269 = WSLB 141), and Hertzka returned the scores on November 9 (OC 52/105 = OJ 1/11, p. 271), with further comment on December 1 (OJ 1/11, p. 288). 3 Mahler’s Ninth Symphony had received its first performance the previous day, June 26, in Vienna. 4 Freund Hein: poetic for the Grim Reaper, or Angel of Death. 5 Schenker’s monograph, Beethovens Neunte Sinfonie (Vienna: UE, 1912: UE 3499), copies of which Universal Edition in fact received from the printer on July 2. |
