Capital city of Ukraine. Between the 17th century and 1917, it was part of the Russian Empire; from 1917 to 1920, following the Russian Revolution, part of several short-lived Ukrainian states. From 1921, it belonged to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, part of the Soviet Union, and since the fall of the latter in 1991 it has been the capital of independent Ukraine.
