Deinen keineswegs liebenswürdigen rekommandierten Brief 2 habe ich vorgestern nach meiner Rückkehr aus Oberoesterr. daheim vorgefunden und beeile ich mich Dir anbei die gewünschte Hälfte d. s. S. 13000 (130 Millionen [sic]) zu überreichen. 3 Du hast Dir zwar Briefe von mir verboten u. wollte ich das Geld erst heute Abend persönlich überbringen, bin aber leider durch geschäftliche Dinge daran gehindert. Anderseits wollte ich Dich nicht länger auf’s Geld warten lassen, weil es Dir die Sache ausserordentlich dringend ist. Meinen Jungen bitte ich für heute zu entschuldigen. Der Bub scheint vergessen zu haben, Dir am Montag zu sagen, dass ich wahrscheinlich verreisen werde, u. am Mittwoch event. nicht werde kommen können. Dies war auch der Fall. 4 Bitte um eine kleine Bestätigung auf einem Zettel Papier unter Kuvert. Entschuldigt, dass ich Euch gerade zu Mittag störe. I found your by no means gracious registered letter 2 the day before yesterday after my return home from Upper Austria, and I hasten to extend to you, enclosed, the requested amount, i.e. 13,000 (130 million [sic]) shillings. 3 I know you ruled out receiving letters from me, and I wanted to bring you the money first this evening in person, but I am unfortunately prevented from doing so by business affairs. Then again, I did not want to keep you waiting for the money because the matter is extraordinarily pressing for you. I ask [you] please to excuse my boy for today. The lad appears to have forgotten to say to you on Monday that I will probably be travelling, and on Wednesday will quite likely not be able to come. This turned out to be the case. 4 Please send me a brief acknowledgment on a slip of paper through the post. Apologies that I am disturbing you at midday. Footnotes1 Heinrich has written a large exclamation mark to the right of this salutation. — Receipt of this letter and Heinrich’s reply are recorded in the latter’s diary for July 10, 1929: “Von Mozio (Br. durch Boten): 13000 S.! Er findet meine Forderung „nicht liebenswürdig“! — An Mozio (Br.): fasse noch einmal die Gründe zusammen, stelle Todesfall u. Inflation voran. Es fällt mir schwer, mich an seine Seele heranzutasten, da die Wahrheit – hier heißt sie Liesl – nicht zum Ziele führen kann u. seine Einbildung von der Sicherheit ohne Wert für uns ist.” (“From Mozio (letter, by messenger): 13,000 shillings! He finds my demand "ungracious"! — To Mozio (letter): I explain the reasons once more, emphasizing the eventuality of my death, and inflation. I find it difficult to commune with his soul, since the truth – here it is called Liesl – cannot lead to the goal, and his delusion of security is of no value for us.”). 2 Writing of this non-surviving letter is recorded in Heinrich’s diary for June 6, 1929: “An Mozio (Br.): recomm. Mahnung – wir kommen am 15. d. um 10h u. holen das Geld.” (“To Mozio (registered letter): notice – we are coming on the 15th of the month at 10 o'clock to collect the money.”). 3 “beeile ... überreichen” (“hasten ... shillings”): underlined by Heinrich in crayon. — The formulation “13000 (130 Millionen)” makes little sense, raising two questions: Did he miswrite “130” when intending “13”? By “Millionen” did Moriz mean “millions” or “thousands”? Schenker records the amount in his diary (see footnote 1) as “13000 S.” (“13,000 shillings”). 4 Georg Schenker’s last lesson of the season, as recorded in lessonbook 1928/29, was Monday June 3. Heinrich continued teaching other pupils until June 21 and 22. His diary for Monday June 24 records: “Georg kommt nicht, entschuldigt sich auch nicht.” (“Georg does not come, nor does he apologize.”), which suggests that lessons may have taken place on June 10 and 17 that are not recorded in the lessonbook. The diary for July 9 records: “An Mozio (K.): warum er u. Georg zuletzt gefehlt haben? Ich teile mit, daß ich Kassenscheine in Dollar angelegt habe. ” (“To Mozio (postcard): why were he and Georg missing at the end? I tell him that I have invested in bank-notes in dollars.”). |
